I understand The Pilot Pub on East Terrace in Gravesend has an exhibition of The Most Hideous Creature in the British Isles. As I understand it, this display of photos is in celebration of Halloween 2007.

Has anyone seen Bungle roaming the streets of Gravesend? I heard he might be looking for the real father of his new baby.

Does anyone know the story behind the mosaic at Gravesend Market and the gates of Denton Church with the men in a boat chained to a blue porcupine ??

In 1568 the second Charter Of Incorporation was granted to Gravesend by Queen Elizabeth I. The town then chose a coat of arms. This was a device of a boat with 1 mast, with it's sail furled. Instead the boat was rowed by 5 hooded rowers and steered by a porcupine.
The porcupine is thought to be a compliment to Sir Henry Sydney, Steward of the Honour of Otford, in whose stewardship Gravesend and Milton were at the time. His arms embodied a porcupine, the rowers showed Gravesend's association with the river side and waterfront.
This is the origin of the mosaic and the metal replica that can be found on the church gate at Milton.
When the 3rd charter was granted in 1632 the coat of arms was changed to a castle with a buffalo's head in the centre, and the latin words, 'Decus et Tutamen' which seems to mean 'My Glory and Strength'.

THE MITRE HOTEL c 1930
Although I supplied the photograph of the Mitre Hotel and am possibly biased, I feel it's now in its correct resting place for all to see and to compare its 'progress' as the years went by.
It was obviously an elegant and popular building in its day - it advertises 'table d'hotel' meals - and the photograph is suitably enhanced by the local characters standing outside who no doubt could have told a story or two over a few free pints!

Very interested in seeing more pictures of Old Gravesend, especially pictures of the residential homes located at Lord Street - now Lordstreet carpark.
If anyone has any kind of info on the above, I would look forward to hearing about it as I am doing a scrapbook for my Grandad who was born there.
Many thanks

Thanks for the comments. Regarding the school photos, if the school is still around of course I personally would contact them first. Then, if no joy there, perhaps the local education authority would be able to point you in the right direction.
Failing that, perhaps the Gravesend Library in Windmill Street (might) to able to help. Hope you find what you want.
